3D computer design

An essential part was missing during a full restoration of a 1956 Cadillac Convertible: the vent window frame on the left door. This element is rather complex and very important for the correct alignment of the soft-top frame.

Luckily, the right door vent window frame was available to work on the opposite side. By using and carefully scanning the existing window frame via 3D computer design, we were able to mirror the scan and get the correct specification of the missing left window frame.

This reproduction was then used to make the mould; this process is called Rapid Prototype. Following this crucial step, a casting pattern was then made at a modern foundry, thanks to the accuracy of the computer scan. Since the cast work tends to shrink at around 10%, the casting pattern was therefore produced 10% bigger than its original size.

After vigilant machining and chroming at our workshop facility, a perfect and yet original looking left vent window frame was finally fitted to the Cadillac.
